How to Read a Birth Chart

A natal chart can look complicated because many symbols are displayed at once. A systematic order makes it easier to understand.

1. Start with accurate birth data

Use the birth date, location and, when available, the recorded birth time. Time is particularly important for the Ascendant and houses.

2. Identify the Big Three

Begin with the Sun, Moon and Ascendant. Note their signs and the traditional themes associated with each.

3. Look at the planets

Ask three separate questions: which planet is it, which sign is it in, and which house is it in? This keeps symbolic function, style and life area distinct.

4. Examine major aspects

Look for conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines and sextiles. Repeating patterns may be more useful than interpreting every minor detail in isolation.

5. Synthesize rather than stereotype

A chart is not twelve independent horoscope labels. Astrological interpretation attempts to combine placements, houses and aspects into broader themes.
