When Astronomy & Astrology Separated

For much of history, people who calculated celestial positions could work in contexts that included both astronomy and astrology. The modern boundary between the disciplines emerged gradually rather than on a single date.

Changing methods and goals

New instruments, mathematical models and systematic observation strengthened astronomy’s ability to test physical explanations of celestial motion. The scientific revolution and later developments in physics increasingly defined astronomy around measurable natural mechanisms.

Different modern standards

Modern astronomy is a physical science based on observation, mathematics and testable models. Astrology continues as a cultural, spiritual or interpretive practice, but its claims about personality and prediction have not achieved scientific validation.

Shared history, different status

The two subjects share vocabulary, imagery and a long historical relationship. Understanding that history does not require treating their modern evidentiary status as equivalent.
