Johannes Kepler: Astronomer, Mathematician & Astrologer

Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) is central to the history of astronomy. His mathematical work on planetary motion helped transform understanding of the solar system. He also lived in a culture where astrology and astronomy had not yet fully separated and he produced astrological work.

A complicated relationship with astrology

Kepler did not simply accept every astrological convention around him. He criticized what he regarded as poor practice and tried to reform astrological ideas while continuing to prepare calendars, forecasts and horoscopes.

His lasting scientific importance

Kepler’s enduring scientific legacy rests on his mathematical astronomy, especially the laws describing planetary motion, not on validation of astrological prediction.

Why his story matters

Kepler illustrates why modern categories should not be projected too simply onto earlier centuries. A major scientist could participate in astrology historically without that participation serving as modern scientific evidence for astrology.
