Hellenistic Astrology: The Birth Chart Takes Shape

During the Hellenistic and Roman eras, ideas from Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greek philosophy were combined into forms of astrology that strongly influenced later Western traditions.

A more personal astrology

Natal astrology focused on the sky at an individual birth. Signs, planets, houses and angular relationships became parts of increasingly systematic interpretive methods.

Astronomy supplied the positions

Astrological interpretation depended on knowing where celestial bodies were thought to be. Geometry, tables and astronomical models therefore mattered to practitioners even though the interpretive claims of astrology are distinct from astronomy.

Ptolemy and later influence

Claudius Ptolemy wrote influential works on both mathematical astronomy and astrology. His astronomical framework and astrological writings were transmitted, debated and adapted for centuries.
